Unlike most Americans today, I still love Kanye West. I love his creative commitment to be weird, crazy in love with Kim Kardashian and offensive.
Kanye’s bizarre comments ranging from questioning Michelle Obama’s influence to his attempt to re-brand the Confederate flag demonstrate a truly liberated person, albeit somewhat ridiculous.
Kanye’s perseverance to hold his vision in a cloud of criticism proves that we must all continue to stay steadfast in the art of evolution. Despite the bad press, Kanye West’s offbeat ramblings taught me 3 things about living in my truth:
Take a risk and exist outside of your comfort zone. Yeezus was raw, the Bound video was weird and Kim Kardashian is over-exposed, but Kanye is doing what is true to his life goals.
Disappointments based on attachments or confusion often create discomfort. Living in our truth means accepting the discomfort and doing it anyway.
Your happiness is not his problem. Kanye’s singing, laughing and dancing are just as important as his serious commentary on systems of division under which we operate. Kanye’s interviews challenge us to view the entertainment industry as more than just pleasure, it can also be disruptive. Living in our truth doesn’t depend on the happiness of everyone around us.
Kanye’s truth is purpose driven. His passion is expressed in his mission to build a creative agency, “Donda” dedicated to his deceased mother Dr. Donda West. While his path to the top is paved with bumpy roads, self-inflicted wounds and emotional outbursts, his vision is clear. Living our truth means following through on our dreams.
Kanye remains my hero of self-determination because his image is based in art and providing people with emotional reactions. Love him or hate him, Kanye is a reflection of the good, the bad and the truth that lives within.
