While flipping through the May 2013 issue of Ebony Magazine, I stopped and jumped for joy to see DC’s own Darius Graham featured as a “Hero Next Door”. Darius Graham is the co-founder of DC Social Innovation, an incubator for innovative ideas that bridge DC’s disparities.

Darius Graham in Ebony Magazine as a “Hero Next Door”
I met Darius in 2011 after winning a grant from his organization DC Social Innovation. The $1500 seed money helped me to lay the foundation for “Anacostia Yogi”. I was able to offer free wellness events east of the Anacostia River. The money also empowered me to scale up my social media message to reach more residents. The DC Social Innovation taught me how to screw in the nuts and bolts of my social entrepreneurial ideas.
I love Darius and his organization because they believe in the little guy (or girl). The organization was the first to reach out to me and support my 2011 “Moms on the Move” mission to bring quality, consistent and cultural wellness options east of the Anacostia River. In 2011, I spoke to his funding community about why healthy women are important for healthy neighborhoods!
His team doesn’t just give money, they give a framework for success. I received legal assistance, graphic design and business guidance. I became plugged into a network of DC’s smartest and most compassionate citizens.
Darius and the DC Social Innovation team continue to support other health projects east of the Anacostia such as the Young Doctor’s Project and Dreaming Out Loud.
