Salty crawfish, swampy alligator pies and funky music took over New Orleans for the annual Jazz & Heritage Fest.
Jill Scott, Billy Joel and BB King were the headliners last weekend, but Jazz Fest was more than just music. Art, culture, discussions and a good ole fashioned celebration left the festival with a warm, friendly and joyous atmosphere.
Jill Scott gave her fans exactly what we came for- soul, energy and a smooth groove. She performed on the Congo Square stage for over one hour and sang my favorite song, “Give it to Me” to a brassy funk.
The festival brought out local and national artisans, jewelry designers and New Orleans’ signature swampy cuisine.
Those Brothers of Brooklyn, NY showcased their distinctive jewelry line.
I ran into the Afro Brazilian, group Magary Lord from Salvador de Bahia, Brazil. They kept the crowd winding and grinding to their Black Semba music.
After I had my fill of dancing, drinking and partying, I traveled off the beaten path to the swampy terrain of Cajun Country.
Cruising down the creepy swamps brought out alligators, ghost stories and peculiar living arrangements.
The New Orleans Jazz Fest is a great way to enjoy the culture and energy of Louisiana without all the debauchery of Mardi Gras. There is still time to catch the rest of the festival featuring Earth, Wind & Fire, Fleetwood Mac, Erykah Badu and Frank Ocean.
