Mommy & Me: 4 Tips for Prenatal Yoga

As a  new mommy, in order for me to be whole and well, I must stay connected to my true self. Awareness is important for new moms and it is extremely important for preparing to bring a new life into the world.

Here are a few tips on how deepen your intimate and honest dialogue between your ego and your true self during pregnancy.

Become Your Own Teacher

If you are new to yoga, I’d recommend only practicing with an experienced prenatal yoga teacher.   If you have been practicing for a while, I recommend taking a prenatal yoga series to learn the modifications. When I was in my 1st trimester and not showing as much, I didn’t want to risk a teacher adjusting me into a deep twist (or any other pose) when twists are contraindicated for pregnancy.  Pregnancy also comes with hormonal changes and you simply may not want to be touched.  Here again, become your own teacher and let the teacher know.  Honest dialogue with your body and needs is key.

Keep Coming Back

Pregnancy is a day at a time.  Some days you will feel great!  Other days you will feel tired, nauseated, or just plain irritable.  I’d say keep coming back to your mat!  I started pretty strong during my first trimester and then somewhere around week 8 or so, the nausea kicked in and the thought of a down dog made the nausea worse.    A few weeks later, I tried a class and it felt right.  I have continued to practice one day at a time since then.  I still have the awareness a  life is growing inside of me and happens from moment to moment. But don’t abandon the practice because it did not feel so good one day.  Tomorrow, your body could change and yoga may be just what the doctor ordered.

Go Wide

The bigger you get, the more you will need to make space for the baby.  Opening your legs makes most standing and sitting poses more delicious during pregnancy.  You can take up your entire mat so no need to try to keep those legs together for any of the poses in Sun Salutations I or II.   Widening the poses also prepares your hips for an easier labor. Don’t be afraid to use every corner of your mat.

Don’t Forget About Your Baby

When I’m on my mat, I use the time to abandon outside distractions and bond with my baby.  I place my hand on my belly at every opportunity, delight in the kicks, and send my love to my belly.  This is interwoven into a prenatal yoga class but if you are in a regular class, you have to do this for yourself.  I like to think of my practice as an act of love to my baby.  I love her so much, even before meeting her, that I’m pausing to embrace gratitude for her life within.  My practice allows me to nurture myself so that I can be a better vessel for her to grow in.  Yoga is an act of love, care, gentleness, and serenity.  My baby deserves all of this and more!
