It had been a long stressful week at work. My body needed to let loose on the dance floor. I called my homegirls and pulled out my sexy yellow dress. But, before I walked out the door, I stopped in the hallway to look in the mirror.
I felt my confidence wane. I began to point out the flaws all over my body, “Why can’t my body look like Amber Rose? Am I too short for this outfit?” Suddenly the positive self-love turned into self-hate.
I stopped myself. I refused let my negative thinking habits ruin my night. Immediately, I practiced a simple yoga breathing exercise.
The foundation of yoga (pranayama) is based in breathing and its power to draw new energy into our body. Inhaling allows fresh oxygen to move throughout the blood cells and flow through the heart. Holding the breath creates stillness. Exhaling is an elimination process pushing out all the unneeded air and waste stored in our bodies. Yogic breathing helps me to start the day with a clear path.
Whenever I feel the urge to think negative thoughts, I stop and do a quick 15 second breathing exercise to usher in positive thoughts, self-love and perspective. If you struggle with negative self-talk, try taking 15 seconds to breathe. Observe how your outward perspective shifts when you give breathing a chance to do inward healing.
