There is something about the winter holidays that make us feel stiff and immobile. The winter stillness and frigid weather creates a subtle stagnation inside and outside of the body. On top of that, add the lack of physical movement and you have a recipe for a gorged and stuck gut. The Revolved Triangle (Parivrtta Trikonasana) is a great way to get unstuck from the holiday sluggishness.
1) Inhale and create length first, anchoring the back foot into the mat.
2) Stabilize the hips and reaching the spine long toward the head.
3) Exhaling the twist from your inner body (belly button).
4) Inhale and allow the spine to releases up towards your head.
5) Imagine your spine is like spiral candy cane growing away from the center.
I love Revolved Triangle because it helps me identify what is really keeping me from moving with freedom. Maybe there is stress along my back, tightness in my hips or too much in my belly. But moving into the pose forces me to pay attention to the symptoms that create that stuck feeling.
This twisting pose is a very challenging pose, despite its perceived simplicity. It helps to strengthen the hamstrings and open the oblique muscles.
The sacred geometrical shape of revolved triangle offers a direct connection to a higher power while keeping us grounded through the lower body.
I use the new year as a chance to push out all of the stuffed energy collected during the previous year. I will be teaching the deep twisting poses like triangle during the Winter Soulful Flow Series. Register online before January 11, 2014
