My Stress Strategy

I used to work at a job that literally made me sick to my stomach. My belly would tie up in knots as I walked through the glass pane doors of my old office building.

I shared a cubicle with a coworker who was a bully. He was rude, dismissive and used every opportunity to cause a disagreement.

 

I felt helpless against his attacks.

I often remained silent. Once I complained to our supervisor. She documented the incidents and stuffed the reports in a drawer.

 

Nothing changed.

The fear, tension and frustration literally began to bubble up inside of me.  I was later diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome. The doctors gave me medicine to address the symptoms. But they couldn’t fix the problem.  I decided to start practicing yoga poses that focused on the belly.

My Stress Strategy: Yoga for the Belly

1) Sun Salutation: Build heat in the body to get blood moving 

2) Chair Pose: Feel the power in the core and lower back to build strength.

3) Deep Twists: Help Massage the internal organs. 

 

My belly became less reactive. I could finally go to work with confidence that I could handle whatever came my way. I no longer needed the doctor’s medicine!

 

Everyone needs a plan for life’s ups and downs.
